There’s been a lot of thought on darkness, darkness and darkness for the past week. I’ve been in that limbo for a time now. Thinking and meditating on the entity called darkness. Well, not just darkness, but darkness in relation to God. Yeah, that’s it! The last article was on darkness also. You can check that out also Darkness is ever with us. However, this article is completely different from the last one. I don’t even think this is going to be the last on this darkness thing yet. However, may or may decide not to publish further…depending. Anyway, right to the point.
I’ve been meditating a lot I tell ya. A lot of questions I posed to the H.S (Holy Spirit) myself. Same question you might have asked, or be asking, or probably have never even considered to ask. In any category you might end up falling into, I believe you would gain clarity and understanding on them in this article.
The Beginning of Everything
Before I can move on, I have to first satisfy the question of whether darkness was before God showed up on the scene or after. It’s easy to go ahead and say; darkness came into existence when God created the heaven and earth. Of course, he created the earth from darkness, into darkness, and full of darkness (Genesis 1:1-2). So, we could have concluded that darkness came into existence when God spoke the earth into existence.
However, before jumping into any conclusions, I’d like you to understand that before God spoke the earth into existence, God was and is. That is, God was and is already in existence far before the time of the creation of the world…and we then again understand that God himself dwells in darkness. God who is ‘light’ shines out of darkness (1John 1:5, 2Corinth 4:6, John 8:12). God’s abode is darkness; God is covered and dwells in darkness (Psalm 18:11, Psalm 97:2, 2Chronicles 6:1). So, if God himself dwells in darkness, then, darkness didn’t come into existence at the creation of the world. Then again, we’re back at the question; did darkness exist before God showed up on the scene or after?
The Sovereignty of God
Now, you’re probably at a icky place right now. Confused so to say…so, was darkness before God?…cos logically and naturally, a thing cannot exist until what it’s meant to survive on is in place. Even that is evident in creation. I believe I mentioned this a little bit in the article; Purpose – Not Created for the fun of it. Basically, the plants and animals didn’t come until there was water. Man wasn’t created until there were animals, plants and water in place. A car or a generator that runs on petroleum cannot be made until there’s refined petroleum in place. You get the gist already.
So, are we supposed to say that God couldn’t have existed without darkness? Hmm. DEFINOTLY! Wait… Hold up a second…I hope you read that clearly? I said defiNOTly. That means “definitely not”. Now, how come this is?
You see, the sovereignty of God is such that nothing created or existing (both spiritually and physically) was created outside of God (the Word – John 1:1).
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 1:2 The same was in the beginning with God. 1:3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
The Word is not just with or of God, the Word is God himself. Also, if you don’t yet understand this, get it now;…”in the beginning” isn’t in the realm of time. “In the beginning” wasn’t talking about the point when God spoke the world into existence, thus, creating the realm of time and the natural order of time. The phrase “In the beginning” was talking about the realm of eternity (where God dwells). Also, get this; when John said “the same was in the beginning with God, and all things we’re made by him”, all things wasn’t referring to humans, or the plants and the animals, or the moon and the stars, not even the entire world. All things means ALL THINGS…and that was “in the beginning”.
So, all things wasn’t referring to just the things that came with this world, all things was referring to the things that were even before this world was. Now, I don’t know everything that was before the world itself, but darkness is definitely one of those. Now, the sovereignty of God Almighty is such that his existence is not dependent on anything, but all things are dependent on him…and that’s exactly why he is referred to as the “ALL POWERFUL” one.
The nature of God is such that he himself and all by himself dictates the duration of what eternity is. So nothing ‘was’ before God, and nothing ‘is and will ever be’ after God. Darkness was prompted to existence by reason of the appearing of God. Darkness thronged and clung itself upon the garment of God upon the appearing of God.
God occupies, sets and is the frame or yardstick for eternity past, and at the same time the yardstick for eternity future.
Revelation 22:13 I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end, the first and the last.
P.S: I am yet to crack open the mystery that prompted this article. So, stay tuned for the part two of this series. Didn’t intend to break this up, but well…turned out so. God bless you.
